Lung cancer is one of the most common and serious types of cancer. More than 43,000 people are diagnosed with the condition every year in the UK. Lung cancer mainly affects older people. It's rare in people younger than 40. More than 4 out of 10 people diagnosed with lung cancer in the UK are aged 75 and older. We are experiencing extraordinarily high demand for same day appointments today. A lot of people are getting in touch about sore throats, cough or viral symptoms. Most cough/cold symptoms will get better within a few days (some symptoms such as a cough can last up to 3 weeks). We do not prescribe antibiotics for most people with a cough/sore throats and will generally recommend self care: plenty fluids, rest and paracetamol/decongestants etc. If you are unsure about your symptoms, you can ask your local community pharmacist or NHS111. Did you know, If it's not safe to talk you can call 999 from your mobile then dial 55. Your call will be transferred to the police. They will try to help you using simple yes or no questions. If you are not able to talk, listen to the questions and instructions so the person on your phone can arrange help. If you call 999 from a housephone / landline and say nothing, your call will be transferred to the police. They will be able to help you, and they will be able to track your location.
