Coil Fitting

  • Priory Medical Group has a team of Specialist GPs trained in Coil Fitting.
  • Coils have a role in helping women with contraception, heavy periods, painful periods and HRT.
  • There are a range of coils available:
    • Copper Coils- come in 5yr and 10yr devices
      • Offering Long Acting Reversible Contraception, easy to reverse when a woman wishes to conceive.
    • Hormone Coils- there are three types
      • MIRENA: offers 8yrs contraception or 5yrs of easing of heavy periods and 5yrs of Endometrial Protection (as part of an HRT regimen)
      • KYLEENA: middle-strength hormone coil, offering 5yrs contraception and lightens periods/ reduces their frequency.
      • JAYDESS: lowest-strngth hormone coil, which offers 3yrs contraception and does not stop periods, but makes them slightly lighter.

 

Advice for Patients Booked in for a Coil Fitting for Contraception/ HRT/ Gynaecology Conditions:

  • A coil can be fitted at any time in a women’s cycle (including at the start or end of a period) as long as there is no pregnancy risk.
    • Current contraception (such as the Pill or using Condoms) should be continued up to the appointment and for 7 days after the coil fitting.
    • For a coil EXCHANGE appointment- there must be no pregnancy risk for 7 days prior to fitting and up to 7 days afterwards.
      • Abstinence (no sex) for 7 days is needed.
      • Or use of condoms for 7 days is needed.
  • All women aged under 25 or with a change in Partner in the last 12 months, are advised to have a sexual health screen.
  • Pain relief (such as paracetamol or ibuprofen) advised to be taken 30 minutes before your appointment.
