Cervical Screening

“The Smear Test”:

 

Did you know cervical screening saves 4000 lives every year?

• Arranging a smear test (cervical screening) has never been easier.
• We have evening and weekend clinics available and you can access appointments by phone, the NHS app or by using the online prioryCARE system (choose nurse appointments > smear test) and our reception team will get in touch with you to book. You may also receive your screening invites and results via the NHS app (text or post if you do not have the app).

Our Specialist Smear Takers are able to offer advice, to any woman anxious about having a smear. An appointment to talk through a smear test or any difficulties is available to book.

You are welcome to contact us at any time if you have questions, concerns or simply need reassurance. You are always in control of your experience at the appointment, please let us know preferences so we can support you in the way that feels right for you. Some examples would be, asking for a small speculum, change of position, for extra time, feel free to play music/games on your phone or bring a friend.

We know it can take a lot of courage to attend for cervical screening, if you feel anxious or unsure, that’s completely understandable. Please know that we are here to support you, listen to you and move at a pace that feels comfortable for you.

Postnatal or menopausal women

If you are having issues with childcare, feel free to bring them along. A chaperone is always available if you would like one, if you could let us know when booking your appointment. Just a reminder please wait 12 weeks post-partum to book your smear.

We take your menopausal status into account, if you feel you would benefit from using some oestrogen pessaries in the lead up to your smear, which can help things feel more comfortable, then just let us know. They need to be stopped 48 hours prior to the appointment.

Trans/non binary patients

We understand that using healthcare services and attending appointments can be a lot, we offer scattered appointments, which help maintain privacy of why you are attending. We are working on awareness and training in our nurse team, helping with inclusivity and understanding. There is always an option to request an early or late appointment when the surgery will be quieter. We also have trans champions as a point of contact to discuss anything before your appointment if needed

We are trying really hard to be a safe space and a visible ali in your communities, we don’t always get it right but speak up and we will know for next time. You also have the option to request 2 weeks of oestrogen (absorbed locally into the vaginal walls) to help make the smear test more comfortable.
