We’ve had a lot of requests for weight loss injections as the media have been reporting that GPs can prescribe medication like Ozempic and Mounjaro from next week. In York and many other areas in England, patients will not currently be able to access these medications for obesity on the NHS. Each area has a Commissioning Board (ICB) who determine the funding and pathways for specialist treatment. Currently, NHS GP practices can only prescribe Mounjaro, Ozempic and other GLP-1s for patients with Type 2 Diabetes who fulfil specific criteria. We will update our website and social media channels if/when this changes. It may be that GPs will be able to refer patients to specialist clinics to access these medications or some practices may choose to take on extra funding to provide staff to run specialist clinics. This is all unclear and unlikely to change in the coming months. There will be very strict rules regarding who can be prescribed these medications if/when they do become available for NHS use. This week is #CervicalScreeningAwarenessWeek. Cervical screening, which used to be called smear test, is a test to check the health of the cervix and help prevent cervical cancer. It's offered to women and people with a cervix aged 25 to 64. You can get booked in via the NHS app, using the prioryCARE form (choose nurse appointment tile) or by calling up. We may directly contact you when you are due to offer you an appointment. We try to offer flexible appointments through the week, some evenings and Saturday mornings. When you are due your next screening you might receive a notification on the NHS app, a text or a letter.
This week is #CarersWeek “A carer is someone who provides unpaid care and support to a family member or friend who has a disability, illness, mental health condition, addiction, or who needs extra help as they grow older. It isn’t someone who volunteers or is employed to provide support.” This year the theme is 'Caring About Equality' highlighting the inequalities faced by unpaid carers, including a greater risk of poverty, social isolation, poor mental and physical health. Far too often, carers of all-ages miss out on opportunities in their education, careers, or personal lives, just because of their caring role. Get involved in Carers Week 2025, and together let’s work towards an equal society, where carers are truly valued, recognised and supported.
